What is the best way to clean the foot platform sandals?

I bought a used pair of Birkenstock sandals (online auction) and the area of the foot is black. Before launching into the garbage, I thought I would ask if anyone knows a good cleaning agent used in these sandals .. The straps are leather, do not know what the foot platform, but underneath it is cork and rubber. These are expensive shoes, but I will not set foot on them in this condition.

You could try saddle soap and then dry in the sun. That should kill germs too.
